STEP TWO: A LITTLE PREPARATION
Set up tips:
What’s behind you?
While Homer riding Stampy wearing rainbow heart sunglasses might be amusing, if it doesn't match your brand personality or is too distracting, it's gotta go. Check your behind!
Not too high, not too low
Keep the camera straight on. No one wants to see your boogers.
Put yourself in frame
Make sure your face stays center of frame and leaves enough space around you for me to crop to portrait (reel size), even though we’ll be recording in landscape.
What to wear?
WHATEVER YOU WANT
But, if you do need some help deciding:
Solid colours are less distracting,
Stripes can cause a weird wavy effect on camera,
Your brand colours are a great addition.
Sound and Microphone tips:
- Use a Quality Microphone: If possible, use an external microphone to ensure clear audio. Built-in laptop or phone microphones can sometimes produce poor-quality sound.
- Test Your Microphone: Before starting, test your microphone to ensure it’s working correctly and the sound is clear.
- Choose a quiet location, and be mindful of potential interruptions or background noise such as cars, kids or animals.
- Keep a glass of water nearby to stay hydrated, but avoid drinking too much right before recording - a too-moist mouth makes weird squelchy noises (and yes, I said moist 🙊)
Other helpful stuff:
Make sure your phone is set to Do Not Disturb
Key words or phrases on sticky notes help you remember stuff
If using a separate mic/camera then clap at the beginning to sync audio
STEP THREE: The Main Event
We’ll be using Squadcast instead of Google Meet or Zoom, as it gives us a much better quality recording.
Get to know Squadcast
I highly suggest having a look at this site prior, to get comfortable with Squadcast and what to expect

Most importantly, be comfortable
While most days I’m okay with showing up on camera without makeup, hair not done and wearing mismatched sweats; for content that’ll be used over and over again, even I do some stuff to avoid cringing at the sight of myself.
If it makes you more confident to put that extra time into how you look – take the time to do it. If the best time to schedule this is right after your next hair appointment when you’re feeling fab – check the calendar and do it. If your happy place isn’t in front of your regular webcam at your desk, have a think about where you will feel comfy. Be intentional about it, and your confidence will shine through.
And remember – we’re all a little weird. I mean, I once showed up on a professional Zoom meeting dressed as Spiderman.
